What I love most about the Houston art scene is how entrepreneurial the artists are. They don’t wait around to be discovered – they get out there and do it! Look at Houston’s own The Art Guys who created an entire career by branding themselves unique. By the way, this weekend is their mobile “show” Loop, sponsored by Memorial City Mall. It’s all part of their 30th anniversary and details are below.
On National Night Out I met artist Diane Warkentin and her husband Nathan. They are the picture of independent artists. The two make their living as decorative painters and muralists and have started incorporating commissioned art into their repertoire. Saturday night the couple will host a PopUp Art Show at 736 E. 20th St. (At Studewood), 6-9 p.m. Diane, a paper mosaic artist, will showcase her newest series, “Magical Birds.” Also featured are Kari Steele, a sculpture artist who creates bugs out of found objects; Martin Nonhof, a woodcrafter; and James Taylor, who crafts bowls out of gourds.
Saturday, Nov. 9
The Art Guys LOOP event #11 of “12 Events” will take place Saturday, Nov. 9 through Sunday, Nov. 10. The Art Guys will drive the I-610 loop around Houston for 24 hours. During the event, audiences may call and speak with The Art Guys directly at 832-712-6207. This phone number will only be active for the 24 hour period of the event.

Open Artist Studios – Winter & Spring Street Studios, 2101 Winter St. and 1824 Spring St. Live music is new this month, featuring Niko Lorraine, who is by her own declaration the daughter of the marriage of Folk & Rock. I have to agree, phenomenal singer.
