New mothers often venture out in search of those perfect toys, clothes and the like for handling their precious bundle of joy; but wind up with more questions than answers. However, one duo in the Heights has their sights set on helping parents navigate those unknown waters. Pure Parenting Shop owner Sarah Godwin set out with a mission about four years ago when she first opened her shop as a native Houstonian displaced to Pennsylvania. “I created this place as a safe space, because I was an out-of-towner,” she said. Just a few short years later, however, Godwin, and Adriana Rodriguez-Foy – owner of Third Coast Threads – have created a store at 2401 Yale St. in the Heights that could be likened to the parenting version of a kid in a candy store. And the story of how a chance … [Read more...] about Heights shop provides a safe haven

Houston’s Art Car Parade is one of the hottest tickets in town the second weekend of every April, and students are hard at work putting the finishing touches on this year’s entry. For a newbie peeking down outside Heights High School’s parking structure, the sight of an old junker suddenly ablaze with jewels, gems, and sculptures from bumper to bumper would strike them as odd. Pastors pulling community back to pews on Easter
Easter Sunday remains one of the most-attended services each year, and local spiritual leaders will never deny a curious mind or heart. However, the ever-present question for them remains – how will they draw the unchurched or those seeking a worship spot to call home? The Leader decided to speak with area pastors to get a deeper look into their efforts at encouraging a return to the pews this Easter. Challenging calling Pastor David Harrison at First Church Heights said using celebratory occasions such as Easter in attempts to bring in new members is a constant tug-of-war with the allure of modern society. “I believe it takes a very courageous person to remain true to the scriptures and not deviate in a post-Christian world. It is very difficult to stay true to the scriptures and … [Read more...] about Pastors pulling community back to pews on Easter

District C meeting focuses on Harvey recovery, CIP progress
City officials say they have not forgotten about planned projects around the area – but caution that progress may be held up as the city works to balance those needs with Harvey recovery needs. During last week’s District C community meeting, councilmember Ellen Cohen, Mayor Sylvester Turner and a multitude of city officials joined dozens of residents for the annual discussion, focusing on Harvey recovery efforts and the progress of projects that are part of the city’s Capital Improvement Plan. “Hurricane Harvey has changed a lot – it’s impacting how we roll out CIP projects and other plans,” Turner said, noting more than 6,300 homes and businesses in District C were impacted by the storm, and more than 3,000 Houston families remain living in hotels or homes in need of reform. “We … [Read more...] about District C meeting focuses on Harvey recovery, CIP progress

Heights H-E-B suffers permit setback, expected open in fall
Those anticipating completion of the Heights H-E-B will now have a slightly lengthier delay than originally planned according to the company. When the 92,000 square-foot store set to border 23rd Street and North Shepherd Drive broke ground last October, it marked the end of a series of setbacks – among them Hurricane Harvey – for the San Antonio-based grocer’s expansion efforts. The day of the groundbreaking, H-E-B Houston Scott McClelland said the current schedule slated the grocery giant’s Heights creation for an August 2018 grand opening. However, a company spokesperson told The Leader earlier this week that permitting issues have slightly delayed completion back to a late fall opening. As dates are subject to change based on various factors, the company declined to set a … [Read more...] about Heights H-E-B suffers permit setback, expected open in fall
