While no one is calling Ella Boulevard north of 610 ‘restaurant row’ just yet, they can’t call it a fast food wasteland for much longer either. No offense Raising Cane’s. With the news of Gatlin’s BBQ’s move from 1221 West 19th Street to a 4,200 space in the new center at 3510 Ella Blvd. – and anticipated opening of the Berry Hill at Ella and 43rd Street by mid-January – the area has been abuzz with anticipation. NewQuest Properties leasing agent Danny McCormack, and St. Pius graduate, said he knows that area residents are excited about Gatlin’s because he has been getting calls from them. McCormack said that he had been talking with them since last August but the deal was just finalized last week. “They liked the location, the new construction, and the lack of restaurants in the … [Read more...] about Ella corridor soon to be ‘restaurant row’?
The Flying Saucer Pie Company’s Bill Leeson could teach us all a lesson about work ethic. In his 70s, Leeson normally works from 5 a.m.-2 p.m. But during November and December, when his pie company does the lion’s share of its business – selling 21,000 pies in three days during Thanksgiving weekend – he pulls all-nighters with other staff, getting there around midnight and working straight through the morning. And he’s been at it since the 1960s. Leeson arrived in Houston in 1963 from Canada as a 20-year old. For the previous five years, he’d been a merchant seaman. “I was tired of being cold,” said Leeson. “When I got here I was broke. I had enough money for the plane fare but not a cab. I walked from Hobby to the Downtown YMCA.” He already had a job in the hotel across the street … [Read more...] about A slice of heaven: behind the scenes at Flying Saucer Pie Company

October is upon us and were just a couple weeks away from trick-or-treaters and festive parties. This year Halloween falls on a Friday, so what better way to celebrate All Hallows Day then with a few good friends and a killer cocktail. Well, maybe not killer (we want your friends alive) but something tasty. For this month’s cocktail of the month, I would like to offer a suggestion: A Bloody Gin Fiz. The spirit can usually be referenced with the three martini lunch era, an era that didn’t last long for obvious reasons. Depending on who you ask, the spirit took a bad wrap over the years. As of recent, Gin has become a popular go-to choice and will be our go-to choice for our Bloody Gin … [Read more...] about Sweet fall treats and festive cocktails
