WHAT: The Citizens’ Climate Lobby (CCL), a grassroots advocacy organization with 460 chapters across the US and Canada, is bringing its 5th annual conference to Houston in February. The conference focuses on building common ground to address climate change across the states of Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi and includes workshops to help anyone build climate advocacy skills. The Saturday keynote, given by the Senior Vice President of the Climate Leadership Council, Greg Bertelsen, will discuss how to engage businesses, conservatives, and local leaders on climate solutions.
KEYNOTE: “Why Major Businesses Support Putting A Price On Carbon,” presented by Greg Bertelsen, JD. Bertelsen oversees the Climate Leadership Council’s outreach to business constituencies, works on some of the Council’s congressional engagement, and contributes to policy research and development. Prior to joining the Climate Leadership Council, Mr. Bertelsen served as Senior Director, Energy and Resources Policy, at the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM). He has worked with members of Congress as well as high-ranking administration officials, and has served as an official advisor to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) on environmental justice issues.
WHEN: Saturday, Feb. 3, 9:00 am – 6:00 p.m. (registration deadline January 29, 2018)
WHERE: The conference will be held at the University of Houston, 271 Student Center South, Houston, Texas 77204-3049.
WHY: Based on the evidence, 97 percent of climate scientists agree that humans are causing climate change A market-based approach to dealing with the risk of climate change is supported by leading conservatives, including Ronald Reagan’s Secretary of State George Shultz who serves on Citizens’ Climate Lobby’s Advisory Board. It’s the kind of solution — an alternative to regulations — that appeals to conservatives.
CCL’s annual conference is an opportunity to build your climate advocacy skills, define strategies, and share your vision of what we want for our state and region. You’ll learn how Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi, aided by future passage of a national revenue-neutral carbon fee and dividend policy, can thrive economically as it transitions from being an energy leader in fossil-based fuels to a leader in the 21st century clean-energy-based economy.
ABOUT CCL: Citizens’ Climate Lobby is dedicated to generating the political will for effective national policies to address climate change. The group is working to build support in both parties for a carbon fee that returns all of the revenue to households, creating a market-based incentive to make the transition from fossil fuels to clean energy.
