For almost 40 years Houston’s own “Ezra Charles and the Works” lit up stages around the world with a brand of Texas boogie woogie rock that no one else could come close to duplicating. From his signature flaming baby grand piano to the iconic all-girl horn section, the band entertained audiences like no other.
But, after decades on the road, the “Works” went their separate ways, and Ezra focused his passion in a new direction. Gone were the big productions with massive audiences giving way to more intimate venues, a simple drum kit and a piano.
Today it’s pure musical magic as a father and his son tell the story of the genre that started it all. It’s a beat and a brand spanning more than 100-years of American history and embraced worldwide. It’s “The Story of Boogie Woogie” as can only be told by the entertainer himself . . . Ezra Charles.
“The Story of Boogie Woogie” combines music and dialog with humor as only Ezra can present it. The performance is all about the intertwined relationship between Blues, Jazz, Ragtime and other roots rhythms performed as it once was on the so-called “Texas-Style” piano.
It’s a family affair as Ezra is accompanied by his talented son, Jakob Helpinstill, a recent graduate of Houston’s famed High School for the Performing and Visual Arts. Together they produce a high-energy two-hour performance for all ages that rolls back the clock to a simpler time of tapping your feet to a boogie woogie beat.
“Nobody doesn’t like boogie woogie”, Ezra often says to his audiences between tunes played in his signature fiery style. “It’s real, it’s American made, and it’s just plain fun!”
Ezra Charles will be presenting “The Story of Boogie Woogie” at the Heights Theater in Houston, Texas on Friday, April 14th. For information or tickets, visit theheightstheater.com or ezracharles.com.
