If residents have become fearful of future penalties based on official-looking letters, don’t worry – the city’s Solid Waste Management Department says a letter making some rounds in our local neighborhoods is bogus.
Last week, a Leader reader submitted the photo after receiving the strange letter in the mail, complete with the official-looking SWMD letterhead at the top. Along with seemingly commonplace warnings and advisements, however, came a warning that residents are likely unfamiliar with.
“To ensure compliance with SWM’s rules and regulations, City of Houston residents are provided one warning,” the letter reads in its current form. “Subsequent violations will result in a minimum $45 citation per occurrence. Those fees are assessed to the resident’s City of Houston water bill on the next billing cycle. Thank you for your cooperation!”
City representatives confirmed the statement was indeed a fabrication.
“This letter IS NOT from our department. All residents please be advised and on the lookout for this FAKE letter that is circulating!” the department wrote on its Facebook page.”
