The Leader first reported in 2014 that the nearly 800,000-square-foot Northwest mall, which sits on over 50 acres of land near the U.S. Highway 290 and Loop 610 interchange, was up for sale, but that its owners were keeping quiet on the details. Rumors have flown wild over the last couple of years, and they popped up again earlier this week that the venue is scheduled to close on March 31. That remains unconfirmed, however, as officials are currently unable to comment on the matter.
A sudden resurgence of these rumors begs the question: what is to become of the mall, and where will shop or booth owners go from here? The Leader first caught wind of the newfound rumors Tuesday morning, from social media posts such as this:
“Yesterday, I got my haircut and was told that the Northwest Mall is closing at the end of the month. According to my hairdresser, they were all surprised. Palais Royal, the bar, the antique market, and the healthcare school will stay open as they have exterior doors,” one resident wrote on Next Door Tuesday morning. “So, if you have a favorite person at the mall, you might want to get over there and find out where they are going.”
The Leader is actively reaching out to the mall to confirm. We will stay with this story as it unfolds.
