The Houston Heights lost one of its cornerstone personalities on June 18, when Yvette “Bitsy” Hornak, 59, unexpectedly passed away. Bitsy graduated from Harvard Elementary, Hamilton Junior High, and Reagan High School — and, as she once declared, “You just don’t get any more Heights than that.” Bitsy was sweet, tough, hilarious and direct — she didn’t take any… well, let’s simply say Bitsy didn’t tolerate any nonsense from anybody… even as she enjoyed life immensely and was always a loyal, loyal friend. Heights folk knew her from the old Studewood Food Market (later Fiesta, at 14th Street), from Jimmy’s Ice House, and from the Big Kroger in Merchant’s Park. Bitsy’s sad passing merely propels the Houston Heights another notch forward in the ongoing dilution of our neighborhood’s uniqueness. I am certain I will never know anyone else like her.
Local legend, ‘boot-maker to the stars’ passes away
I attended high school with Rocky’s sister-in-law my husband With Rocky brother. We also attended church with his Mom and the both of them. My prayers go out to the family. Oak Forest will truly miss him. Best of luck to Micheal as he has boots to fill. I’m sure he can.

Correction: my father did not purchase the shoe repair store until the mid 1970s. Previous owner was not related to our family.
