Very good article. Restaurants will surely fail without simple accounting controls. Leasehold Improvements and Restaurant Equipment should be depreciated 7 or 15 years at the very start. Great simple Payroll software starts at $45. LLC’s or corporations are very cheap to set up. And yes, Texas Franchise Tax takes about 10 minutes before May 15th to avoid a $50 penalty. Area tax accountants charge very little to nothing for new business support. Important to use them.
You missed the reason most restaurants don’t make it to the tenth year, greedy landlords at the fifth year lease end.
It has gotten so bad, that I am now changing my focus from looking for a good lease space, to looking for a piece of property to buy. If my restaurant fails, I can rent it out to another person with all the dreams.
I agree that all the new places opening in Oak Forest/Garden Oaks is worrisome. Many of us who have moved here in the last 10 years did so because of the combination of (nearby) urban amenities and family-friendly neighborhoods (and deed restrictions!). The addition of a few stable places that actually cater to the people who live here is a good thing that improves our quality of life. What we don’t need are an influx of specialty restaurants and bars that draw in people from all over town. Our roads and infrastructure won’t keep up with the additional traffic and I like being able to drive or walk to the grocery store without worrying (much) about drunk and/or obnoxious drivers. I’d much rather spend an extra 5-10 minutes in the car on date-nights and other special occasions. It’s not like we have to drive into town from Katy or The Woodlands.
Resident urges awareness following tragic pet death
I have two dogs and a cat so I understand why Katie Macdonald is upset about her cat’s death. One of my dogs was attacked by a free roaming pit bull while I was walking her on a leash. She did survive.
Regarding Andy, the cat, was he running free or was he in his yard? All pets are supposed to be constrained to their own yard or, if they cannot stay in their own yard, they are required be kept in the owner’s house. Anytime you let your pet run free, they can be attacked by other animals that are also running free. Pet ownership applies to all pets; cats and dogs. Keep your pet in your yard or in your house and it will be a safe place for them.
Ashby on Ross
Regarding Lynn Ashby’s excellent May 25 dissertation on Lawrence Sullivan Ross (1838 – 1898, Soldier Statesman and Knightly Gentleman, Brigadier General C.S.A., Governor of Texas, President of the A&M College), how soon can we expect the grievance-industry, trigger-warning safe-space non-reg snowflakes at A&M to demand that Sully’s campus statue be ripped up and melted down? It’s frankly amazing they haven’t already sanded off that monstrously upsetting “C.S.A.” part of the inscription.
