A three-year-old boy is dead after apparently being left on a bus following a field trip from his daycare. Deputies with the Precinct One Constable’s Office say the child was discovered unresponsive inside the vehicle located outside the daycare in the 8000 block of Antoine. The discovery was made only after the boy’s father arrived to pick him up at approximately 6:30 pm. Investigators believe the child was inside the bus for nearly four hours.
“It’s just tragic,” said Constable Alan Rosen.
Twenty-eight students from the “Discovering Me Academy” were taken by bus to Doss Park for a field trip earlier in the day. They returned to the daycare between 2:30 and 3:00 pm. It was found to be 113 degrees inside the bus when deputies arrived on scene.
Deputies are interviewing the driver of the bus and a chaperone who was on the field trip. Records show the three-year-old had been listed as accounted for on a list of students compiled upon a return to the daycare.
Rosen urged the public to consider this case a tragic reminder of the potential danger inherent with summer weather in Houston and implored parents and caregivers to take a look around their vehicle before leaving it.
“Do something that always reminds you that you have a loving package in the back seat of that car,” he said.
The Houston Police Department will follow up on the case, and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office will decide whether to file criminal charges in this case.
