Throughout the month of October, explore local businesses, events, and restaurants during Arts District Month.
In partnership with Houston First, Visit Houston and Le Meridien Houston Downtown, the Arts District is increasing awareness and promoting tourism opportunities via artsy weekends designed for perfect staycations.
Events include Sawyer Yards Fall Biannual, Holler Brewing Co. First Friday Art Market, Second Saturday at Sawyer Yards, The Market at Sawyer Yards, Sculpture Month, Dia De Los Muertos Festival at MECA and more.
Saturday evening, a second sculpture exhibit titled Outer Limits – Sculptures in Art Alley opens. Sawyer Yards is proud to be a participating venue of Sculpture Month Houston 2018. The public is invited to the opening this Saturday, October 13, 2018, 6-9 p.m. Houston artists, Meredith ‘Butch’ Jack, Jack Gron, Tommy Gregory, and Alexander Squier will have sculptures on view until fall of 2019.
I visited with Alexander Squier while he was working on his piece. Temple to the Origin is a tribute to a brick recovered from the remains of a demolished Houston bridge. Other bricks salvaged from the old bridge, still in good shape, have continued their working lives; they have been reincorporated into the walkways of Sawyer Yards. Temple to the Original treats this misshapen old brick as venerable rather than disposable, using it as a master copy for production of a new generation made in its own image.
The opening of Outer Limits will be held in conjunction with the Sculpture Month Houston exhibition Peak Shift located in SITE Gallery Houston, October 13, 2018, 6-9 PM. Beer generously donated by Buffalo Bayou Brewing.
All exhibitions are free and open to the public Monday – Saturday 9 AM – 5 PM.
Parking is free and located at 2101 Winter Street, Houston, TX 77007.
It’s time for the 2018 Bayou City Art Festival Downtown, held this Saturday – Sunday, October 13-14, 2018, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. In addition to spotlighting 300 artists and featuring, entertainment, food trucks, music and more, the fine art event will also host a Halloween costume contest on Sunday, October 14, 2018, at 2 p.m. in the Children’s Creative Zone.
