As I was going to St Ives, I met a man with seven wives. Every wife had seven sacks. Every sack had seven cats. Every cat had seven kits. Kits, cats, sacks, and wives. How many were going to St Ives? -- The Weekly Magazine of August 4, 1779 The Wall Street Journal – Stocks dropped across the board in early trading when word swept the floor that the town of St Ives was being evacuated due to the spread of the deadly Cat Virus. “The mayor has ordered everyone to flee for their lives,” a resident said, running from the town. Later, however, stocks rebounded on word that the mayor had ordered the evacuation to loot the empty houses. After hitting a record high, stocks fell to record lows when the kitten crop scored heavily in European markets. But just before the closing bell, some stocks … [Read more...] about Without rhyme or reason
THE TEXAS MEDICAL CENTER – If I drive down Fannin and take a right at whatever street it is, then avoid a Metro train that is headed straight at me, I can, no, I can’t. Have you ever tried to visit anyone at the Texas Medical Center, known as the TMC to those who have just dialed 911? It is the largest medical center in the world, and is probably in the Guinness World Records as “the worst place to drive.” Here is a parking garage that seems to be near my goal, so I drive in, circle up eight floors past “Reserved for doctors,” “Reserved for nurses,” “Reserved for friends and neighbors of doctors and nurses.” Finally finding a door, I emerge into a hospital hallway and wander around until I spot a nurses’ station. “Hi, I need to get to Room 555 in the Gangrene Tower.” One nurse, eyes … [Read more...] about Patient be patient
On Jan. 23, 2017, Donald Trump’s fourth day as President, he met with congressional leaders in the State Dining Room of the White House. “You know, I won the popular vote,” he started off, and then repeated the calumny that Hillary Clinton had received three to five million illegal votes, owning to fraud. “That’s not true,” Nancy Pelosi replied, according to “A Very Stable Genius,” a new book quoted by The New Yorker. This claim by Trump is spooky, even more so if he really believed it. Yes, it’s about time we discussed President Donald J. Trump because we’ve heard so little of him since he took office. Two items: First, do you think Trump will ever leave office? That’s not a stupid question. Have you seen those signs: “Trump in 2020, 2024 and 2028?” His paranoid suspicions surfaced in … [Read more...] about Will the president set a precedent?
MY COMPUTER – I am scrolling through the Internet, looking for dirt on anyone I don’t like, and I see an ad for Mike Bloomberg. And another. I turn on the TV and there, between ads for Mike Bloomberg, is a bit of programming. Open any daily newspaper, and there are full-page ads for, one guess, Mike Bloomberg. The New York billionaire has already spent more on TV ads than GEICO, Bud Light and whoever makes those pills that guarantee you’ll be smarter than a jellyfish. Bloomberg is also spending more than all the other Democrats running for their party’s presidential nomination. He has promised that, if he doesn’t get the nod himself, he will bankroll the winning Dem -- just to defeat President Donald Trump. Oh, I forgot about Tom Steyer, another billionaire -- worth a measly $1.62 billion … [Read more...] about Follow the money – out of Texas
THE FRONT PORCH – “Hi,” says a guy holding a clipboard. “I’m with the U.S. Census Bureau, taking tabs on all Americans. Are you newly arrived, Muslim or one of those traitors against making America great again and vote Democrat?” “I’ve been here a long time,” I reply. “Actually, I’m a sixth-generation Texan and a member of the Sons of the Republic of Texas. And I vote.” He scribbles something on his clipboard. “So you are a citizen of the Republic of Texas and not of the United States? And you have voted in U.S. elections? Just like Governor Abbott said, voter fraud in Texas is ‘rampant.’” And thus begins the 2020 head count of Americans, get ready. But Texans are being hornswoggled by our own aforementioned Gov. Abbot and his Republican buddies which will cost you and me lots of … [Read more...] about Coming to our census
