The store has been baking pies at this location for 50 years and produces anywhere from 500-7,000 pies per day. If you like to break statistics down like me, on their busiest day, they make around five pies per minute. It is not uncommon for business people to buy 50 to 100 pies at a time to distribute to their customers for the holidays. Flying Saucer offers 10-15 different varieties from fruit to cream pies. Even if the food wasn’t delicious – which it is, but I’ll get to that – I’d pay money just to visit with Ginger & Fork owner Mary Li. I watched her make the rounds of her restaurant, which is getting ready to celebrate its two-year anniversary, and realized that the friendliness and good cheer wasn’t just for me. Good food without good service is a deal breaker in a market as competitive as Houston and Li knows it. Born in Hong Kong, Li was a resident of Los Angeles and Chicago – where she was in the restaurant business – before moving with her mother to Houston 24 years ago. The salad was created by restaurateur Caesar Cardini, who was an Italian immigrant who operated restaurants in Mexico and here in the U.S., according to Wiki. While bourbon, beer and tacos have been staples at Eight Row Flint since it opened in early 2016, there has been another mainstay for nearly that long – their Tuesday night cooking series. “We’ve been doing the cooking series almost since we opened,” said General Manager Christina Ramey. The brainchild of Chef Ryan Pera and the team at Agricole Hospitality, which includes Coltivare and Revival Market in its roster, the Tuesday night series was intended to shine a spotlight not just on chefs from Agricole’s restaurants, but from other Houston eateries.
