The name of the place doesn’t make sense, at least not to me. Because during each of my three visits to 544 Yale St., I never felt as if I had a lack of good fortune or would need some the following day. Going to Better Luck Tomorrow, for fans of good food, good drinks and good times, feels like hitting the jackpot from the moment you walk in. The popular Heights gastropub, which opened in 2017 and is owned by Bobby Heugel and award-winning chef Justin Yu, features a funky-yet-relaxed vibe and an eclectic crowd that can congregate in booths, at the bar or on one of two outdoor patios. No matter your preferences – in a seat, in a glass or on a plate – quality and attentive service are constants. Another common thread, at least in my experience, is the fried chicken. I ordered it … [Read more...] about Review: Tomorrow’s another day … to return to Heights gastropub
Mongolian chicken lo mein fro Pho & Grill. Walking into Pho & Grill for lunch, I first noticed the space and how well-maintained it was. Then I noticed that I couldn’t spot any workers. With no one at the front, I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to seat myself or wait to be seated. So I assumed it was the former. A server came out a few seconds after I sat down and brought me a menu. I had made the right decision. The menu offered a variety of appetizers and entrees. I was going to order the steamed dumplings, which were stuffed with chicken and veggies and served with soy sauce, but it turned out the restaurant had run out. Instead I got the spring rolls with grilled chicken. For my main dish, I had a hard time deciding between the vermicelli and lo mein. I ended up … [Read more...] about Review: Pho & Grill’s good, so where is everybody?
The Guac-A-Dog and onion rings from Good Dog Houston, both of which tempted The Leader's Zarah Parker's nephew, Zane. Good Dog Houston serves gourmet hot dogs in a little house in the Heights on Studewood Street, which is charming in and of itself. The dachshund might be its mascot on the logo, but walking up the front porch steps of Good Dog, I was met with a tabby cat lazing about. I didn’t mind having to walk by it to get to the door. The cat never moved an inch. Inside the tables were full of people already enjoying their hot dogs and even the bar seating was half taken. There was more room on the front porch and back patios and, luckily, it wasn't raining. Now I had never had a fancy hot dog. Actually, I don’t think I had ever even ordered a hot dog from a … [Read more...] about Review: Good Dog offers great take on American classic
El Bonny plate from Teotihuacan Mexican Cafe. The exterior of Teotihuacan Mexican Café is painted pink, making it easy to spot when cruising down Airline Drive. Inside, wooden tables pack the place, and to the right of the entrance is a connected building full of tables as well. Compared to the other Tex-Mex spots popping up, Teotihuacan exudes an old-school vibe I can’t help but prefer when looking for classic Tex-Mex cuisine. As soon as I sat down, fresh tortilla chips were placed in front of me with salsa. After salting the chips, I dug in. After a few conversations about Tex-Mex with fellow Texans, I realized everyone has a unique way they judge a restaurant. And when a restaurant meets their standards, they are loyal to it. Other than the obvious, such as the taste … [Read more...] about Review: Teotihuacan, the comfort food of Tex-Mex
Fried chicken tenders and Crispy Fries from Sam's Fried Chicken & Donuts. Walking into Sam’s Fried Chicken & Donuts reminded me of a small-town spot where everyone goes to get chicken, but with the added bonus of specialty donuts. Once I looked over the menu I realized Sam’s was more than just a fried-chicken joint, but one that cared about the ingredients. The bottom of the menu proclaimed that Sam’s only uses vegetarian-fed, American Humane Certified chicken raised with no antibiotics and no growth stimulants or hormones. This made me excited to see if I would be able taste the difference. The space inside is relatively small. You can choose to sit inside, or there are a few small tables on the outside. On a busy day, it’s probably best to grab and go. I ordered the … [Read more...] about Review: Sam’s does fried chicken right
