On account of the COVID-19 pandemic, runoffs for the March 4 primary election will not be held until July.
Harris County Clerk Diane Trautman announced this week that, per a proclamation by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, the runoffs scheduled for May 26 have been postponed until July 14. Early voting for the runoffs is now scheduled for July 6-10, and the deadline to register to vote is June 15.
A race important to Northwest Houston voters is the Democratic primary for the District 148 seat in the Texas House of Representatives. Heights resident Anna Eastman, who in January won a special election runoff for the seat vacated by Jessica Farrar, was the leading vote-getter March 4 and will compete in a runoff against Penny Morales Shaw, who has been endorsed by Farrar.
Joe Danna and Paul Day are in a runoff for the Republican nomination for Harris County Sheriff. The winner will face incumbent Ed Gonzalez, a Democrat, in November’s general election.
Another Republican runoff pits Wendell Champion against Robert M. Cadena in District 18 of the U.S. House of Representatives. The winner will face incumbent Sheila Jackson Lee in November.
In District 2 of the U.S. House, Democrats Elisa Cardnell and Sima Ladjevardian are competing for the right to face incumbent Dan Crenshaw in November.
In the race for U.S. Senator from Texas, Democrats MJ Hegar and Royce West are in a runoff, with the winner to face incumbent John Cornyn.
“We will continue to work with the Secretary of State and keep our residents informed about additional updates regarding the runoff elections,” Trautman said in a news release. “We encourage voters to take advantage of early voting and ballot-by-mail options.”
To be eligible to vote by mail, voters must be 65 years or older, have a disability or illness, be out of the county during the election period or be confined in jail without a conviction. The last day to apply for a ballot by mail is seven days prior to an election. Voters can visit www.harrisvotes.com to print out the application or request one by calling 713-755-6965.
