Police say a 5-year-old girl was shot early Monday morning in a Northwest Houston apartment, and her 15-year-old brother subsequently turned himself in to authorities.
Houston Police Department spokesperson Jodi Silva said the children’s mother told police she awoke to a gunshot at about 12:50 a.m. Monday at 4619 W. 34th St., the location of the Ranch at Silvercreek Apartments. Silva said the mother told police she found her daughter with a gunshot wound, her son in a panic and a gun on the floor. The mother said her son subsequently picked up the gun and fled, according to police.
HPD spokesperson Victor Senties said Tuesday that the 15-year-old boy turned himself in to police Monday night. Senties said the boy will be referred to Harris County Juvenile Probation authorities on a charge of reckless aggravated assault.
Silva said Monday that the girl was transported to a hospital and was in stable condition. She also said police are not disclosing the location of her gunshot wound.
Anyone with information about the shooting incident is encouraged to call 911 or HPD’s major assault division at 713-308-3600.
