Memorial Park Golf Course is getting a facelift and could soon host a PGA Tour event.
Renaissance Golf Design, the company founded by renowned course designer Tom Doak, has announced a plan to renovate the popular public course in the heart of Houston. Doak was enlisted by the Astros Foundation, which underwrites the Houston Open and plans to host the annual event at Memorial Park as early as 2020.
“You can imagine we’re really excited about the fact it’s going to happen,” Don Placek, senior design associate for Renaissance Golf Design, said Friday.
The Houston Open, sponsored by Shell until 2017, is now held
at the Golf Club of Houston, a private course in Humble.
Doak has never designed a course used for a regular PGA Tour event. He recently designed The Renaissance Club in East Lothian, Scotland, which will host the European Tour’s Scottish Open in 2019 and 2020.
