Right off the bat let me remind you that Saturday night, First Saturday Arts Market switches to evening hours 6 -10 p.m. Watch the website for updates if mother nature strikes Houston again. Robin Kirby performs her latest originals at 7 p.m. 1stSatArtMarket.com.
Saturday afternoon, Urban Eats Restaurant will host an afternoon reception for artist Diane Gelman, 3-5 p.m. at 3414 Washington Ave, Houston, TX 77007. Owner Levi Rollins emailed me recently and told me about how Urban Eats has a passion for supporting local artists. I had noticed the art on the walls before, but didn’t know they rotate the art every few months, host receptions and feature the artists info on their website. Top notch! Check them out, and I recommend the Sticky Beef Banh Mi & Fresh Herbs salad. Wow! feasturbaneats.com
Susannah Mitchell, director of the recently recognized Washington Avenue Arts District, joined me for lunch at Urban Eats this week to discuss some upcoming projects. The 501c3 non-profit’s mission is to promote and advance cultural offerings in the area with marketing and special projects.
The District’s recently relaunched website is literally filling up with area events daily and Mitchell tells me to keep an eye on the exciting fall schedule.
Mitchell noted two events at the Silver Street Studios massive air conditioned hall that formerly served as a loading dock for a local beer distributor. This weekend the Vintique Flea takes place in what I describe as an air conditioned “Round Top” with collectibles, antiques, architectural salvage and, as they put it, “This ain’t your grandma’s antiques!” Info and tickets online vintiqueflea.com.
The following weekend is 2nd Saturday open studios on the Sawyer Yards Creative Campus and you’ll find my latest market open, too.
At Silver Street Studios on the weekend of June 11 and 12, meet the queen of Houston indie design, the epitome of all that is stitched, sewn, poured, crafted, handmade, vintage, and fair trade: Brittany Bly’s Pop Shop Houston Summer Festival. There are indoor and outdoor vendors, food trucks, and music. This artfully curated festival is one of my favorites and a very popular show. Get tickets and event details at PopShopAmerica.com.
Silver Street Studios is located at 2000 Edwards St. Houston, TX. 77007. Keep up with all of Washington Avenue Arts District projects and happenings on their website artsdistricthouston.com.
