Tony Vega, the owner and founder of Tony’s Mexican Restaurant at 2222 Ella Blvd., died Thursday, according to a Facebook post by the longtime Shady Acres eatery.
Many customers of the restaurant, which opened in 1992, expressed condolences and shared fond memories of Vega in comments on the social media post by Tony’s. They described him as jovial and generous, often greeting customers with a smile and a “welcome home” upon entering the dining room.
“So sorry about Mr. Tony,” one customer wrote. “He was such a very nice man and very friendly whenever I came to his restaurant. He will be dearly missed by the community.”
In a previous Facebook post Friday, Tony’s announced it is temporarily closed until further notice.
“For those who knew him, he was a great husband, father, grandfather, pastor, boss and friend,” the restaurant wrote in its post about Vega. “It is a very difficult moment for the family and at this time we ask for your prayers and privacy.”
