Tiger senior Lauren Mercado, an Oak Forest/Garden Oaks native and Duchesne Academy graduate who is now at Trinity University, has been selected as the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Softball Offensive Player of the Week.
What a week Mercado had over the six home games. Mercado batted .611 (11-18), with a home run, eight RBI, and scored nine runs. In the Tigers final regular-season home series, Mercado blasted a two-run homer in last Friday’s 9-4 SCAC win over Centenary College. She tied teammate Caitlynn Dykes for the season lead with three home runs. Mercado has 12 career home runs to her credit, and Dykes leads the program with 14 round-trippers.
On Friday’s (April 17), opening 8-0 run-rule victory over Centenary, Mercado batted 3-3 with an RBI and scored two runs. On Saturday, Mercado hit 2-2 with two RBI and scored a run in the 9-1 run-rule win. The Tigers and Mercado made their last home appearance and defeated Centenary 9-0. Mercado went 2-2 at the plate and drove in a run. The week began with a doubleheader split against the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. Trinity rallied to win the second game 5-2, and Mercado hit 2-4 with an RBI and produced one run.
This season, Mercado is hitting .337 (28-83, second on the team), with 17 RBI, 15 runs, and six doubles, along with her three home runs.
The Tigers wrap up their regular season Saturday and Sunday with two SCAC doubleheaders at Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas. Trinity qualified for the SCAC Championship during the series with Centenary. The tournament is slated for April 24-26 at Schreiner University in Kerrville, Texas.
