Area grocery shoppers have yet another new option as H-E-B has opened a Heights-area store for the second time this year.
The Texas-based grocery chain, which in late January unveiled a store on North Shepherd Drive in the Heights, held a grand opening Wednesday for its 96,000 square foot location at 3663 Washington Ave. Earlier this month, German grocer ALDI opened a store in Garden Oaks.
H-E-B said in a news release that its newest location, which anchors the Buffalo Heights mid-rise project at Washington Avenue and Heights Boulevard, is its first to be built in a mixed-use development. The store is on the ground level and has second-story parking with elevators, escalators and an escalator designed for shopping carts.
The new store also is H-E-B’s first to receive the Environmental Protection Agency’s GreenChill gold-level certification. The company said the Buffalo Heights location uses 70 to 80 percent less refrigerant than a typical grocery store, which will reduce its greenhouse emissions by up to 75 percent.
