Some Heights residents were ushered out of their homes early Tuesday morning when a big rig flipped over near 6th Street and Rutland Street.
A Houston Fire Department spokesperson confirmed that a tanker truck containing 7,500 gallons of Ethanolamine, a colorless, viscous liquid that smells similar to ammonia, tipped over shortly before 6 a.m. Tuesday. Though no Ethanolamine escaped the big rig, an ABC13 report said the truck was leaking motor oil and hydraulic fluid.
The contents were offloaded from the truck, which was turned upright and towed away by about 4 p.m. After the tanker overturned early Tuesday morning, HFD said approximately 30 nearby residents were evacuated to 7th Street.
HFD dispatched Hazardous Materials Response Teams to the scene in order to contain the area, which officials said should be cleared in a matter of hours.
“(Residents) will be able to return once the scene is cleared,” HFD said Tuesday afternoon on Twitter.
