Dozens of veterans gathered at the American Legion Post 560 in Garden Oaks last Saturday to participate in a book-signing party.
Most of the veterans in attendance are featured in The Leader’s recently published book, “Our Veterans,” which honors local residents who have served in the United States Armed Forces.
While the “Meet the Heroes” book signing was both a meet-and-greet and a chance for the veterans to sign their page in the book, the post also took the time to recognize that it was National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day.
To kick off the event, each veteran spoke about his or her time in service.
Mangum Manor resident Henry Martinez, whose story is told in the book, came prepared with ribbons and extra photos that didn’t make it into “Our Veterans.” He shared with the room how he joined the U.S. Army when he was just 16 years old and was later sent to the Korean War.
Marialourdes Blassan, Donald Cleveland, Chuck Custard, Jarvis Elliot, Carrie Gordon, Jack McCabe, Peggy Mondy, John Patrick, Robert Rivera and Will Spencer are just a few of the veterans who also were able to share part of their story and are also inside the pages of “Our Veterans.”
For the veterans who have died, family members came to support them and the event.
After the veterans were done speaking, a flurry of activity sprung up as people crisscrossed the room to make sure everyone signed their book.
Copies of the book are $39 and can be purchased at The Leader office, located at 2020 N Loop W, Suite 220, or online at theleadernews.com.
