A man who police say led officers on a chase into the area and fired gunshots at them Wednesday night was arrested and charged with multiple crimes, according to the Houston Police Department.
HPD said in a news release that Mathew Arron Clements, 30, has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault of a public servant and one count each of felony evading arrest and felon in possession of a weapon in the 182nd State District Court. No HPD officers were injured and none discharged a weapon during the incident, police said.
According to HPD, officers responded to alerts of several robberies in the area of Hammerly Boulevard and Bingle Road, encountered a white pickup truck driven by Clements and pursued it. Another male unidentified by HPD exited the truck during the pursuit and surrendered to police.
HPD said Clements continued his attempt to evade officers and led them to the 2700 block of West 18th Street, where he allegedly fired a weapon toward police. He later abandoned the truck in the 100 block of Harris Court and tried to flee on foot but was apprehended by police, according to HPD.
HPD said its investigation into the incident is ongoing. Anyone with information about the case is encouraged to call HPD at 713-308-8800 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-8477.
