Rayford Barrett, 87, born Sept. 18, 1932 in Garrison, Texas, died March 23. Barrett attended Stephen F. Austin University on a basketball scholarship. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He then started his 43 year career in Sales with the Southern Pacific Railroad and retired in 1993. He was a longtime member of the American Legion and Transportation Club of Houston. Barrett was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in the Heights for 64 years. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Erna Lee, daughters Cindy Daily, Rhonda Laumen, sister Annie Ruth Arrington, four grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter.
Dorothy M. Bartkowiak, 87, born Feb. 1, 1933 in Chappell Hill, Texas, died March 17.
Ramonito L. Garcenila, 79, born Oct. 4, 1940, died March 17.
Edward Gerken, 68, born Oct. 5, 1951 in Gary, Indiana, died March 20. He is survived by his brother Robert Gerken.
Noragene Hackney, 89, born May 25, 1930 in Shereveport, La., died March 24. She graduated from Reagan High School in 1948. She married Donald M. Hackney in 1951. They moved from the Houston Heights to Timbergrove Manor in 1957, where they raised their three children. She was a longtime member of Houston First United Methodist Church. She had a long career with, and retired from DeWalch Technologies in 2019 after 36 years. She is survived by sons Barry and Wesley, and daughter Laurie Meredith, and four grandchildren.
Wynne June Newell, 95, born Dec. 2, 1924 in Lamesa, Texas, died March 25. She took a job with the U.S. Weather Bureau as a meteorological aide and was posted in Albuquerque, Honolulu, and Cleveland. In 1952, she returned to Texas and was married to Capt. Charles Newell of the U.S. Air Force. She later took classes in Political Science, graduating from the University of Houston in 1978 before embarking on a Master’s Degree in Foreign Relations at UH-Clear Lake. Newell is survived by her children Wynne Weeks, Charles Newell, Mark Newell, and Jonathan Newell, sister Emogene Robinson, and five grandchildren.
Homero Alvarado Vasquez, 47, born Nov. 11, 1972, died March 28.
Daniel Lynn Yanowski, 67, born Aug. 6, 1952, died March 21. Yanowski was a 1971 graduate of St. Pius X. He retired from Marek Brothers in 2018. He is survived by his daughter Debbie Yanowski, brother Dennis Yanowski, sisters Brenda Yanowski, and Kathy Hetmaniak. Memorial contributions may be made to NAMI (National Alliance on Mental Illness), the Humane Society, or a charity of one’s choice.
