Cheryl Lynn Anderson, 62, born Oct. 4, 1957, died July 20. She was a graduate of Waltrip High School and earned her bachelor’s degree in education from the University of Houston. She was employed 20 as a public school teacher. She is survived by her mother Cleo Streater, daughter Kimberly Anderson, son Joshua Anderson, sister Susan Truax, brother Gene Reeves, and three grandchildren.
Emilio Berrones, 47, born May 22, 1973 in San Luis Potosí City, San Luis Potosí, died July 19. He is survived by his daughter Laura Berrones and parents Francisco and Juana Berrones.
John Ferrata Jr., 85, born April 25, 1935, died July 18. Ferrata attended St. Thomas High School in Houston, and after graduation in 1953, attended The A&M College of Texas, now known as Texas A&M University, where he received a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering. He was a member of the Aggie Corp of Cadets. John graduated Texas A&M and was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force and received his wings as an Air Force pilot in January 1961. After his Air Force career, Ferrata continued on in the private sector as Director of Administration at the Houston law firms of Sewell & Riggs and Martin, Disiere, Jefferson & Wisdom. He is survived by his children John B. Ferrata III, Paul D. Ferrata, Charlotte Ferrata Toney, and his children’s mother Friedabelle Ferrata, brother Charles D. Ferrata, 13 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren.
Joe Hernandez, 84, born May 6, 1936, died July 19. He attended Jeff Davis High School. Joe worked as a butcher for many years which led him to eventually open Joe’s Deli in the late 80’s. He is survived by his sons Joseph, Randy, Richard and Robert Hernandez, daughter Bernadette Zamora, 14 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren.
Leo Albert Hollas, 76, born Sept. 14, 1943 in High Hill, Texas, died July 19. Hollas played baseball in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization for two years. He graduated from the University of Houston with a Bachelor’s degree in Education. He worked in construction for 45 years. He was a member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Houston for 54 years. He is survived by his wife Rose, children Chuck, Greg and Brad Hollas, daughter Jane Malkowsky, brothers Alvin, Armand, Robert, Winfred, Richard, and 12 grandchildren.
Iva May Knox, 97, born April 4, 1923, died July 24. She is survived by her son, Van C. Knox, daughter Dena Heslep, five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and one great-great granddaughter.
Roy Soraiz, 83, born Oct. 12, 1936, died July 24.
Ricardo Luis Valencia Jr., 35, born Jan. 15, 1985, died July 24.
