Joseph Anthony Barbaria, 100, born Jan. 25, 1920 in Dickinson, died April 27. Barbaria served in World War II in the Philippines as a chef and continued his love of cooking throughout his life. He owned and operated the Melrose clothing store in Dickinson, as well as the Shalimar Coiffures Salon in Houston, over 20 years. Survivors include his son Joseph A. Barbaria Jr., two granddaughters, and two great-grandchildren.
Sarah Frances Burris, 74, born Sept. 25, 1945, died April 23. Burris is a 1964 graduate of Reagan High School. She was an active class member of the National Honor Society, Red Coats, as well as senior class Secretary. She graduated from the University of Houston in 1968 with a degree in marketing and went onto a long-term career with AIM Management Group Inc. Survivors include her children Jeb Burris and Ashley Burris Kirksey, brother Scott Williams, sister Maureen Turner, and two grandsons.
Jack Maxey Clark, 69, born Sept. 6, 1950 in Houston, died April 19. Clark was raised in the Heights and he served in the Marines. He is survived by his wife, Agnes Clark, son Joshua Clark and his wife Sharon, sister Evie Cummings, and brothers Orie Clark III, Glenn Clark and Joel Clark.
Henry Davis, 99, born Jan. 2, 1921, died April 24.
Marjorie S. Freeman, 95, born Sept. 23, 1924, died April 30. Freeman graduated from Randolph-Macon Women’s College and was a Member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. She did her graduate work and received her master’s at Brown University. She taught math and physics at South Texas Junior College, which later became the University of Houston Downtown. She was an Associate Professor of Applied Mathematical Sciences at U of H Downtown. She is survived by her children John C. Freeman III, Walter H. Freeman, Jill F. Hasling, Cathy Brill, Helen Freeman, Paul Freeman, and several grandchildren.
Judy Dunn Gutierrez, 78, born Nov. 9, 1941, died April 19. Gutierrez was a native Houstonian and a member of First Baptist Church. She is survived by her husband of 48 years, Benny Alfonso Gutierrez. She is also survived by her best friend Ruth Markham, her sons Victor Kaiser, Bart Gutierrez, daughter Erin Stamper, brother Robert Dunn, nine grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
Robert Eugene Kristynik, 87, born Sept. 22, 1932, died April 29.
Daisy Caroline Pettit, 96, born Feb. 8, died April 29. She was a volunteer as a Candy Striper at Memorial Herman NW Hospital. She is survived by her son, Douglas Pettit.
Lawrence Jerome Sienkiewicz, 66, born June 8, 1953, died May 2.
John Fred Stehlik III, 73, born June 16, 1946 in Houston, died April 22. He is survived by his sister Lelia Pfeil.
Lela Pearl Straley, 93, born Sept. 5, 1926 in Cornith, Miss., died April 25. She is survived by her children Regina Smith, Pam Cogar, Angie Hooper and Ronnie Butler, 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Straley volunteered with meals on wheels, at the Beaumont center for special needs children, was a den mother for the Cub Scouts, and was a Girl’s auxiliary leader at her church.
