After stumbling to the school’s first losing season in nearly a decade last fall, St. Pius X was looking for answers when new head coach Greg Cranfill took over.
It looks like any lingering doubts have been eliminated thus far.
After a season-opening victory over Lutheran High North on Sept. 25, the Panthers followed it up with another impressive performance last week, using a 27-point second quarter to race past Concordia Lutheran 47-14 at Parsley Field.
Undra Ferrow, who was converted from linebacker to tailback this season, followed a 162-yard, two-touchdown performance against Lutheran High North last week with another prolific game last week. Ferrow ran for 146 yards and two more scores against Tomball Concordia Lutheran as the Panthers (2-0) racked up 197 yards on the ground.
Quarterback Carson Rodgers, meanwhile, looks to have settled into his starting role. The senior signal caller threw for 296 yards and three touchdowns in the win. Receivers Rickey Thomas, Jr. (153 yards) and Logan Tanner (137 yards) also shined for the second consecutive week. Hayden Payne had nine tackles and an interception for a Panthers defense that pitched a second-half shutout.
In other private-school action, Lutheran High North and St. Thomas each dropped to 0-2 on the season with losses to The Village School and Dobie, respectively, last week.
Kamare Shorts (304 total yards, five touchdowns) and Jaaron Henderson (121 receiving yards, two touchdowns) led the Lions in their 49-48 loss to The Village School. For St. Thomas, 317 total yards from quarterback Maddox Kopp and 125 receiving yards from Cameron Bonner were not enough as the Eagles were unable to recover from a 28-point halftime deficit in a 42-14 loss.
In public school action around the area, Booker T. Washington kicked its season off with a 20-0 victory over Scarborough to match its win total from last season. Waltrip, in its first game under new head coach Jeremy Kirt, lost 58-0 against Brazosport.
