After seven years as principal at Wainwright Elementary, Christina Aguirre-Oliva is leaving for the top spot at Ketelsen Elementary at 600 Quitman St.
A Houston ISD employee for 26 years, Aguirre-Oliva started as a third-grade teacher at Wainwright. After 12 years, she became an administrator at Scarborough High School, her alma mater. After five years at Scarborough, she served as the founding assistant principal at the Mandarin Chinese School in HISD before coming to Wainwright in August 2013.
During her tenure, Wainwright became a dual-language school. Aguirre-Oliva said in 2015 that her experience helping open the Mandarin Chinese School had a huge impact on the decision.
“Having a program that allows students to become fluent in more than one language and learn about other cultures not only increases academic performance, but develops students into learners who can really contribute to a city that represents a very diverse and global community,” she said.
A “Wainwright Elementary Principal Profile” town hall was held Wednesday to gather feedback from the school community in order to create a principal profile, or characteristics that the community would like to see in its new principal as HISD conducts its search for a replacement.
